Strengthening Front‑Line Wildlife Protection in Kafue

The Zambia Wildlife and Community Foundation (ZWCF) has committed US$50,000 to Musekese Conservation to support the procurement of essential firearms for Resource Protection teams operating in the Mumbwa Game Management Area (GMA) and Kasonso‑Busanga within the Greater Kafue Ecosystem.

This investment addresses one of the most persistent operational gaps in community‑based conservation: ensuring that front‑line wildlife protection teams have the equipment required to operate safely, effectively, and consistently across vast and high‑pressure landscapes.

Supporting Resource Protection Teams Working With DNPW

Musekese Conservation’s Resource Protection teams work in close partnership with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW). The grant will directly strengthen their ability to deploy across priority areas of the Greater Kafue Ecosystem — one of Africa’s largest and most ecologically significant conservation landscapes.

“Funding firearms is one of the more challenging areas to secure support for within the conservation sector,” said Katrina Garnett, Executive Director of Musekese Conservation. “This contribution makes an immediate difference on the ground — and it reflects the kind of trust and partnership that allows us to move forward with the structure and capacity this work requires.”

ZWCF’s Perspective on Long‑Term Conservation Capacity

“Effective wildlife protection depends on well‑equipped, well‑supported teams, and we are proud to stand with partners like Musekese Conservation and DNPW as they carry out this essential work. The Greater Kafue Ecosystem is one of the country’s most important conservation landscapes, and its future depends on strong, coordinated protection efforts. This grant reflects ZWCF’s commitment to strengthening the systems that make long‑term conservation possible in Zambia’s Game Management Areas,” said Brooke Robertson, Zambia Wildlife and Community Foundation.

A Critical Landscape for Zambia’s Conservation Future

The Greater Kafue Ecosystem, encompassing Kafue National Park, Mumbwa GMA, and Kasonso‑Busanga, is central to Zambia’s long‑term conservation future. ZWCF’s work in this region focuses on strengthening the community, institutional, and operational foundations that make durable wildlife protection possible.

This grant forms part of ZWCF’s broader commitment to ensuring that Zambia’s Game Management Areas are adequately resourced — not only through strategy and community engagement, but through the practical tools that keep wildlife and people safe.
